It’s not like I forget, but it is as if the last few days happened to someone else. I am utterly detached from the memories.

I don’t think about my leg although I am aware that it was injured. I’m not even that curious about how well it has healed. In fact I don’t ask about it at all, about how long I have been recuperating, and who treated me for my injuries.

Instead I am full of bubbling energy and keen enthusiasm. I am also very, very hungry.

The kitchen is spotless and appointed like a chef’s dream. Dark green marble countertops and white cabinets. Glass jars of colourful dried fruit and bowls of brilliant yellow lemons give it a working feel. “It’s the maids,” Gil explains, “It’s always like this even, I suspect, when I am not here.”

“Crazy,” I murmur as I take a seat at the wooden kitchen table and watch Gil chop fruit to go with the bowl of yoghurt he has for me.

I know so little about Gil, in reality. We have talked on every subject except how he lives. I only began to suspect that he had significant financial resources when he once mentioned the cars he usually drives and even then I didn’t pursue the subject. It is as if my brain is reluctant to know concrete facts about him, preferring to instead dwell on the person, the smile, the touch and the feel of him.

I’m not sure if that is pure foolishness, or the best way to fall in love.
